About the project

MIDI Forwarder runs as a pair of small desktop applications. The server runs on the Windows PC connected to your MIDI hardware. The client runs on the PC with your MIDI applications, where it creates ordinary named MIDI inputs and outputs.

It can be used alongside Preset Maestro, but works independently of any particular MIDI device or manufacturer. Separate app ports share the connection, and device reservation gives one application exclusive access during a bulk transfer.

Both PCs need Windows MIDI Services. This project uses its preview App SDK and is still in development; source and setup documentation are available, but there is no published download yet.

Use it on a trusted local network or through a VPN. Connections use a shared token for authentication; the MIDI stream is not encrypted.

Features

  • MIDI forwarding in both directions between computers
  • Separate named virtual MIDI ports for each application
  • MIDI 1.0, MIDI 2.0 UMP and SysEx forwarding
  • Device reservation for an application's bulk transfers
